Cloudwater Brew Co. – DIPA – 9.0%
Cloudwater Brew Co. from Manchester: presents DIPA at 9.0%. A seasonal special edition beer from the guys at the Cloudwater Brewery, I was really looking forward to this double India pale ale. Using the Pilgrim Alpha bittering hop in addition to Centennial, Simcoe, Vic’s Secret, Nelson Sauvin, Chinook, Citra, Ella & Pacific Jade aroma hops, I was in for something special. Using a malt bill of extra pale Maris Otter and glucose syrup, I was expecting something a little different.
Firstly 10/10 for presentation, clean and iconic. Not excessively carbonated on decapping, but the hop aroma is outstanding. A resinous and intense floral citrus hop aroma literally smacks you in the nose! perhaps the most aromatic beer I’ve sampled in recent years. The flavour is somewhat lacking. The bittering hops appear to be a disappearing afterthought, however the 9.0% ABV is well hidden for such a simple malt recipe. I was expecting at least a bit of flavour from the classic biscuity Maris Otter grain, but somehow it wasn’t there. I’ve a sneaky feeling the glucose was to punch up the ABV as opposed to using the grain to add more flavour and character. A beer that had so much promise. Even just a hint of crystal malt sweetness would have set this beer for greatness. Overall, It was good. But with a few tweaks, could have been much better.
